I would like to warn you not to use this rose propagation method on any imported roses from your gift rose bouquet.All imported roses are prepared and chemically enhanced for successful transportation and longer shelf life. To achieve this, imported roses are treated with triazoles such as paclobutrazol and pencanazole which are antagonists of growth hormones as auxins and gibberellin and are also retardants of stem and root growth. Even if you manage to get roses to produce roots the new rose plants are not going to resemble the mother plant for the simple reason that all greenhouse imported roses are grown on grafted roots. These imported roses are not frost resistant and disease resistant. New rose plants grown from imported roses are not going to be alike and the flowers will be different.
Instead, in order to achieve successful results you should choose a mother plant for propagation purposes. You can purchase the mother plant from a trusted grower or your local greenhouse. We highly recommend that you purchase rose variety approved for your local climate zone. As they are usually grown from their own roots they are typically frost ¡resistant and disease resistant. After choosing the right one you can start the propagation process. Cut a few healthy rose cuttings. Size doesn’t matter. You have to remove any flowers and leaves from the bottom of the rose stem leaving approximately 2-3 inches at the top.
Take a glass with clean water add a few crystals of potassium permanganate to treat the fresh cut and kill bacteria. Mix this mixture well. Potassium permanganate can be found at your local aquarium store or you can purchase it online. You may also wish to use a root growth hormone purchased at a store or a natural alternative of your choice.
In about 2 weeks time you will see the development of a callus which means that the root generating process is on the way.
In about 5 weeks rose roots will be big enough and the cutting will be ready for planting in a pot or outside.
During the cold periods of the year, plant stem cuttings in a pot indoors. Once the weather becomes warmer, you may plant your rose cuttings outside. Under a 45 degree angle place the cutting in quality sterile garden soil.
