VIDEO LANGUAGE IS URDU/HINDI
ASSALMUALIKUM.
In this video we have discussed about manner of articulation of different consonants.
These are the following:
1. Stops/Plosives: While pronouncing such sounds, air stream stops in the mouth for a short time and then is released like an explosion.
the set [p], [b], [t], [d], [k], [ɡ] are all stops or plosives.
2. Fricatives: Almost blocking of air stream and release through a narrow opening. Sound produce in this manner are fricatives as it creates the effect like friction. [f],[v], [θ],[ð],[s], [z], [ʃ], [ʒ] are all fricatives.
3. Affricates: Combining brief stopping of air stream with obstructed release which results in some friction. Such sounds are affricates. [ʧ] and [ʤ] are two affricates.
4. Nasals: The sounds mostly we produce with the velum raised preventing the air flow passes through nose. In production of nasals, velum is lowered and the air is allowed to pass through nasal cavity.
[m], [n] and [ŋ] are three nasals
5. Liquids: [l] is called a lateral liquid which is produced when the air stream flow around the sides of the tongue and the tip of tongue touches the mid of alveolar ridge.
In [r], tongue tip is raised and curled back near the alveolar ridge.
6. Glides: Sounds typically produce, when the tongue is in motion or gliding to or from the position of a vowel. Glides are sometimes also called semi vowels. [w] and [j] are both glides and voiced.
7. Approximants: In some approaches both Glides and Liquids are combined in one category called approximants.
Thus, [l], [r], [w] and [j] could be said as Approximants.
8. Glottal Stops: When the space between vocal folds (glottis) is closed completely for an instant and then released. The sound produce in this way is a Glottal Stop. This symbol [ʔ] is used for a glottal stop.
9. Flaps: If the tongue tip tap the alveolar ridge briefly, the sound produces will be a flap. It is represented by [D], [ɾ] and other flaps are also in IPA chart.
