IBM kennt man vor allem von den ThinkPad Laptops. Anfang der 1990er hatte IBM aber lange sehr gute Desktop PCs hergestellt und erfolgreich verkauft. Die IBM PS1 und PS2-Reihen sind legendär und auch heute noch gesuchte Sammlerstücke.

Nach dem Erfolg des klassischen IBM Personal Computer Modell 5150 in den 1980ern wurde der PC-Markt von anderen Herstellern dominiert. Um den Markt auch im Heimbereich wieder zurückzuerobern veröffentlichte IBM die PS1 und PS2 Serie.

Technisch für die damalige Zeit auf höchstem Stand funktionieren diese Geräte auch nach über 30 Jahren heute noch. Mit einem Intel 286 oder Intel 386 Prozessor ausgerüstet booten die PS1-Rechner das Betriebssystem aus dem ROM und sind entsprechend schnell.

Abgelöst wurde die IBM PS1 und PS2 Serie von der IBM Aptiva und Ambra-Serie und der IBM PC-Series bis IBM letztlich im Jahr 2005 das gesamte PC-Hardware-Geschäft an Lenovo verkaufte.
