Online comments (namely social media comments) are a breeding ground for negativity and criticism. Everyone seems to forget their manners when they can’t see the impact of their words on the faces in front of them. And I GET IT. It’s so easy to want to put people in their place, or defend ourselves, when we’re dealing with rude people.
But how often does that actually help?
Answer: Never.
Rude comments, critical comments, negative comments...they require us to bring our A-game, our best selves. They require us to remember what the other person forgot - there’s a human being on the other end of that screen, and despite how they treated us, we still need to be the “BIGGER PERSON”, even (or especially) when we handle insults.
Learning how to respond to criticism/critical comments, how to respond to MEAN comments, or just how to react when someone insults you is the BEST practice for personal development. We get to learn how to “QTIP” - Quit! Taking! It! Personally!
