Der Diamond Multimedia Rio PMP300 MP3-Player war der erste massentaugliche MP3-Player, der ab 1998 auf den Markt kam. Die ersten MP3-Player wurden von der deutschen Firma Pontis bereits ab 1995 entwickelt und gebaut. Die koreanische Firma SaeHan Information Systems entwickelte 1998 den MPMan F10, der bereits im gleichen Jahr auf der Cebit vorgestellt wurde.

Damals war noch der Anschluss der MP3-Player am parallelen Port Standard. USB etablierte sich erst in den folgenden Jahren. Speichermedien waren Ende der 1990er noch selten, verbreitet war die Smart Media Card, wovon zwei Stück diesem Diamond Rio PMP300 beiliegen.

Mit seinem 32MB internem Speicher konnte der Diamond Rio MP3-Player für 399 DM nur 8-12 Musikstücke speichern und wiedergeben.
