In this video, I explain how to protect your business ideas and whether you should protect your business ideas. Some common ways to protect your business ideas are with an NDA (non disclosure agreement) and using various common sense techniques such as working with people you can trust.
A non-disclosure agreement (NDA), also known as a confidentiality agreement (CA), confidential disclosure agreement (CDA), proprietary information agreement (PIA), or secrecy agreement, is a legal contract between at least two parties that outlines confidential material, knowledge, or information that the parties wish to share with one another for certain purposes, but wish to restrict access to or by third parties.
A non disclosure agreement can be a unilateral non disclosure agreement or a bilateral non disclosure agreement. A unilateral NDA means it only protects one side, and a bilateral NDA means it protects both sides. Additionally, a non disclosure agreement can be between individuals, companies and non-profits.
Unfortunately, there are a few issues which decrease the effectiveness of the NDA in protecting business idea. The first issue is that you actually have to go to court in order to get anything back which is rightfully due to you. And not everyone has the appetite to go to court because it takes an investment of time and money.
While the NDA is the best legal tool to protect business ideas, it may not be the best tool to protect business ideas overall. In general, the great thing you can do to protect your business ideas is to simply work with people who you can trust and who have a reputation for being honest and having a high degree of integrity.
